Can Siló Permaculture Center
This founding page never took place because we decided to temporarily move to England and wanted to be sure that the money raised would be really used for the purpose we mentioned in it.
A campaign by Nomadic Permaculture
Who are we?
Nomadic Permaculture
We are Nim, Oriol and Ohli, a nomadic family of permaculture, we offer our knowledge and time to projects and organizations worldwide.
After spending much of the last year between northern Thailand, Nepal and California, we decided to settle in early 2013 in Catalonia, as a base camp. The two are currently working on our Permaculture Design Diploma and have participated fully in the design and implementation of a wide range of projects, and general maintenance of permaculture and community centers. |
Our Project
Can Siló Permaculture Center
Recently we have installed in Tarragona, in Can Silo a small house with more than four acres that surround it. Here, we have begun the transition from a land abandoned for over thirty years in a permaculture centre, which will implement the site, to create a sustainable ecosystem in which holistically benefit all residents and surraundings.
In the design of the regeneration of the site, a multifunctional way, we have begun offering courses and introduction to Permaculture weekend workshops. These courses are intended through the experience, introducing students to the world of permaculture, the development of knowledge and skills, ethics, principles, skills, and tools necessary to delve into the wonderful world of life and improvement of permaculture design. |
The Site
Can Siló, is in Spain, into the Sierra de Bonastre in Catalonia. It has almost 5 hectares of land, at 200m high. With a weel and a more than 100 years old stone house . One quorter of the land is fairly flat and arable, and the rest has terraces, whith a slope of 20-30 degrees.
The land was leased in February 2013, part of the site, had land for a commercial use, mainly focused on the vineyard and fruit trees such as olive, carob, cherry, hazelnut or almond, and since the last time they were worked, had pass over thirty years. Succession had almost covered all the vineyard with brambles and weets, and the orchard has become a Mediterranean forest, blending fruit trees with pine and herbs like rosemary and thyme . |
Permaculture educational center
Since arriving here in February 2013, we have been focusing a lot of our energies on restoring the old stone house, slowly turning it into a home for our small family. As the land had been left to go wild for many decades, we spent much of the first year in thoughtful observation, watching the seasons turn, watching the wild flowers grow, learning to know the habitats of the animals sharing this land with us.
We began experimenting with the soil with a small garden area and tried out some different growing techniques, to learn how this soil type would respond. We became familiar with local weather patterns and have watched carefully how each of the elements pass through the landscape.
During this time we have been able to build our intentions and vision of how we would like to integrate ourselves into this land with harmony and consideration for all that is here with us. Now, with this conscious foundation underneath our feet, we are beginning to put into place our design plan for the land and for our lives here.
At the moment we are focusing on developing our water management plan, including a rainwater harvesting system both for the house and land. We are also in the middle of building our solar power system for the house using recycled solar cells. We will update on the progress of these soon.

What we got done?
In this last 4 month we did several works to impove the lan. To impruve the soil quality, we used the organic matter of the forest cleaning, uncontrolled weeds and pruning of fruit trees, to create large amounts of compost, most of them eighteen days compost.
This has been crucial to start implementing the garden design, which are high beds, with a mandala in the center.
We do not use machines, and the creation process is slower, but we are proud, to see the results of hard work are starting to pay off.
We are restoring the house, and two water tanks of racaptacion of 5000ltrs by rainwater, that soon will provide water in the driest months of the year.
We started offering workshops and weekend courses, with which we want to spread the permaculture to neighbors, visitors and volunteers.
Now, our neighbors are quite skeptical to all kinds of agriculture that is not based on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. We believe we can make a positive change in the region, giving examples of organic, sustainable and regenerative agriculture.
